Share Tweet Share We live in an age where we are always connected. They joke when they say you won’t see a 20 something without a phone attached to their hand but in reality this is absolutely correct. Generation Y or the ‘Younger generation’ love the web. The internet is our playground and we intend to use it as just that. I recently however stumbled upon Brandon Vogt’s great blog (You MUST read it) and a post of his which really perked my interest on fasting from the internet and what Brandon learnt from doing so (you can check the blog out here) I was particularly drawn in by Brandon’s point 1 which suggests ‘I don’t need the internet’ and was inspired personally to see whether this is indeed true for myself. More than anything I wanted to see what could be achieved without the internet. The idea behind an internet fast for me personally is to detach myself from distractions in order to excel in other ways. Watching TV for 7 days straight after work instead of spending time on the laptop is a counterproductive reason for partaking in an internet fast; essentially I want substantial, tangible results one way or another. Currently I spend anywhere between 10 and 13 hours a day online. A large portion of this is due to my job however the other 2-5 hours are either social or maintaining my online interests outside of work. I’m basically heavily involved online. Of course the internet will be used for work (Unless of course my boss let’s me have the week off) however activity will be restricted to what’s required to fulfil my work duties to their current standard. As soon as work finishes however the internet will not be used until the next morning when I clock back into work. But what’s the point? Good question. What is the point? Well it’s simple really. I’m conscious of having the same routine with the way I do things. Wake up, check Twitter, go to work, come home, cook same dinners, internet only method of researching blogs and so forth. I’m basically conscious of becoming one dimensional and lacking creativity. In order to turn this on its head it sometimes makes sense to remove the one thing which aims to make everything easier; the internet. But what will you do instead? Weirdly the plan is to keep things very much the same yet enhance them. Now this may sound contradictory but hear me out. I’m hoping that without the online distractions I will be able to improve my efficiencies elsewhere. Instead of making a quick meal to rush back to the web I will focus on producing great food. Instead of leaning constantly on online resources for blog research Ill grab books and research using alternative methods. Hell I may even write blog posts using a pen and paper and type up at a later date (Too far?) Instead of focusing all my reading online I will take books from the library and educate myself the old fashioned way. Outputs won’t necessary change just the way they are achieved and I am hoping this will have a positive impact on me as an individual and what I produce. What do you want to achieve? That’s the great thing I have no real specific goal from this other than finding out what can be achieved. I’m hoping by making this change I find alternative methods for doing things; find enjoyment elsewhere and become less reliant on the web for huge portions of my life. I think as a generation we have become over reliant and obsessed with the web and are as a result less dynamic in the way we do things. Sure this sounds dramatic but it’s a self challenge and one I am keen to complete. When will this begin? I have provisionally set the 7th October until Midnight Sunday the 13th as my internet fast. Within this period I will not be allowed to use the internet outside of business hours and will continue to work the standard working day. 3G and Wifi will be turned off my smart phone; my laptop will only be used in offline mode. I will lead a completely disconnected lifestyle. Will you do this regularly? Ideally yes. If everything goes well, I survive life without the internet and I found the result of no internet a success then I will aim to do this quite regularly. To begin with once every 2 months and then looking to do this at least once a month. There’s no telling what I deem as ‘success’ yet but it will be something to implement on a regular basis if a level of success is achieved. Get involved: No individual is the same and having a number of people involved in the fast will make the results more compelling. Basically I’m looking for YOU (Yes you!) to get involved and report back your results which will be displayed here alongside mine.
