Share Tweet Lisa, what do you consider typical characteristics of your generation? I believe the traits and personalities of this generation have been created by opportunities provided to them during their upbringing. The typical characteristics of Gen Y (apart from acronyms ) include an expectation for flexible working conditions. Generation Y Lisa Mangelsdorf loves prioritising time for snow skiing. Lisa is from Australia and while sharing the same surname brought them together, she is not related to GAIA Insights founder Martina Mangelsdorf! What do you expect from corporate leadership in today’s business world? To take responsibility for: striving for social responsibilities and not only profit making, encouraging and empowering community leadership, and recognition of the benefits that forming and storming can bring. What engages you most in the workplace and what makes you go the extra mile? My motivation stems from reporting to a manager that inspires me and has the passion to teach me. I need to believe in and be passionate about the product and/or a service that I am involved in. Having a clear purpose which contributes to the relationships in communities, industries and consumers motivates me to go the extra mile. What is your preferred way to communicate in the workplace? I prefer email. Email is both formal and flexible. It is easily transferred into work programs to help prioritise, manage and meet deadlines. Of particular interest is the accessibility and flexibility it provides for. If colleagues are geographically accessible, I enjoy and benefit from face-to-face communication to reinforce the written communication, brainstorm and develop relationships. I also like to use audio and visual methods of communication. Utilising technology such as webinars and online forums is a great way to bring concepts to life whilst not requiring a physical presence. What kind of development opportunities do you expect to be offered by your employer? Professional coaching to assist in personal productivity, running effective meetings and thinking strategically. Additional development opportunities I would enjoy and would potentially benefit from include presentation skills, business writing, strategic planning and social media marketing. Who has had the biggest influence on your career and why? My career has been significantly influenced by my personality and my family played a significant role in influencing who I am. My professional and personal relationships continue to challenge me and provide me with a sense of purpose in what I do. My participation in the Alpine Valleys Community Leadership Program led me to meeting inspiring people who challenged me, showed me different perspectives, assisted in identifying my personal goals and that saying yes all the time only had short term benefits. Please complete this sentence: For me, my job… … needs to inspire, educate and contribute to bringing clarity on the complexities involved in human relationships. What are the priorities during this phase of your life? I yearn to work in a role that allows opportunities and time to achieve my personal values which include a purpose, social wellbeing, being a part of multiple communities, to love and to be loved, to participate and have participation from my family and friends, to travel, to embrace leisure/sport/exercise activities, to own a place I am proud of, to allow self time and to learn. What historic events, values or philosophies have influenced you most to become the person you are today? How did they shape you? My family, friends and partner have played a significant role in influencing the values I hold today. They have supported, loved, challenged and made availability in their lives for me. My participation in the Alpine Valleys Community Leadership Program led me to meeting inspiring people who challenged me, showed me different perspectives, assisted in identifying my personal goals and that saying yes all the time only had short term benefits. Gen Y Lisa says her family and husband have played a significant role in influencing the values she holds today. What do you wish your colleagues from other generations would know about Gen Y? I hope that my future colleagues from other generations understand the benefits of the diverse characteristics, personalities and traits within Gen Y. These include appreciating that ‘challenging the norm’ can be an opportunity rather than a threat. I wish all generations believed effective human relationships involves respecting and valuing different perspectives, approaches and beliefs while also being prepared to challenge others to learn different methods to communicate effectively and efficiently. Thank you, Lisa, for these valuable insights!
