Who Are Generation Y

You may have heard the term and wondered ‘But who are Generation Y’ and this is a very good question. Generation Y is just that a generation. Born between the 1980’s and early 1990’s they are the group who follow closely on the heels of Generation X and are said to be the future leaders of businesses across the globe.

They don’t however just occupy the name Generation Y. Far from it actually. There are so many names to define this generation so when asking yourself ‘who’ they are you may want to learn every single name they follow. Millennials, Y generation, eco boomers are just some of the terms used to describe this large generation.

When you understand exactly who Generation Y are it’s also clear to understand exactly what they are about and what they stand for. Generation Y were born within a growing technological planet meaning computers, mobile phones and the internet became staples within their everyday life. This has led to organisations across the globe adapting the way they speak to their audiences. This is echoed by the ever increasing advertising spend online making it the largest advertising channel in industry. This highlights the rise and dominance of Generation Y.

Generation Y within the workplace or on a whole within society are often viewed as lazy, flaky and non committal. Their loyalty to business is often questioned and many researchers suggest the generation want everything now. This attitude towards the generation is completely flawed and to really find out about the generation you need to truly understand what they stand for.

Generation Y have grown up with parents from an overworked era and have seen strain/stress grow before their eyes. Having seen this the y generation have a desire for work which means something and work which they are heavily contributing to. This work therefore needs to create happiness and if this cannot be fulfilled within the workplace then the generation will seek happiness elsewhere.

When asking yourself the question ‘Who are Generation Y’ then the simple answer is a generation who want to be fulfilled within the workplace while still having time to run with things they are passionate about. Life to this generation is a balance and ultimately happiness is what it comes down to. Often the misconception is that they are lazy and disenchanted which is not the case. This is a new generation which cannot be compared to previous generations.
